Safety for Contractors

Landsvirkjun places great emphasis on the safety and health of contractors.

Here we provide information on key contractor requirements, useful guidelines, rules, and risk management strategies.

Key Requirements for Contractors

  1. Risk Assessment: Contractors must submit a detailed risk assessment for all projects, identifying hazards and mitigation measures.
  2. Safety Training: All contractor employees must complete Landsvirkjun’s online safety, health, and environmental training.
  3. Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Contractors and their employees must wear appropriate PPE, such as helmets, safety glasses, hearing protection, and protective clothing.
  4. Incident Reporting: All accidents, near misses, and other safety incidents must be recorded. Serious incidents must be reported immediately to Landsvirkjun.
  5. Work Permits: Contractors must obtain a work permit before starting work in power stations or operational areas.
  6. Fire Protection and First Aid: Contractors are responsible for having fire safety measures and emergency plans in place, with necessary first aid equipment readily available.

Life-Saving Rules

At Landsvirkjun, we have established nine life-saving rules. Their purpose is to define essential safety measures that help manage risk and prevent accidents.

It is crucial that contractors working for Landsvirkjun adhere to these nine rules whenever engaging in projects involving the associated hazards.

Risk Management and Risk Assessment

We place a strong emphasis on systematic risk management as an integral part of our daily operations. Our goal is to reduce the likelihood of accidents, damage, and unexpected incidents, while continuously improving and ensuring a safe working environment.

We are committed to ongoing improvements in safety through structured risk management, regular reviews, and strong collaboration with employees and contractors.

    • All work within the company must be based on a solid risk assessment, and no work should begin unless the risk assessment has been completed and approved. This applies to both employees and contractors.
    • Contractors must submit detailed risk assessments for all tasks unless otherwise agreed upon. A comprehensive site risk assessment is in place for Landsvirkjun’s power stations, addressing the hazards associated with daily operations.
    • For maintenance projects and other temporary work, a specific risk assessment must be conducted, considering the conditions, tasks, and risk factors involved.
  • A risk assessment must clearly include the following:

    • A description of the work.
    • The main tasks that pose risks.
    • The primary hazards involved.
    • The required skills and knowledge of personnel.
    • How safety measures will be planned and implemented.
    • Employees must review the risk assessment for all tasks, be aware of the associated hazards, and implement all specified safety measures before starting work.
    • Risk assessments must be regularly reviewed and updated in response to changes in work conditions, projects, or other circumstances that may impact safety.
  • When conducting a risk assessment, special attention should be given to:

    • Workplace conditions, machinery and equipment, materials, and chemical handling.
    • Work procedures, work habits, employee behavior, and human capability.
    • Clearly defining mitigation measures to reduce risks.
    • Eliminate the hazard (most effective): Remove the hazard entirely from the project, e.g., by modifying the design or work process.
    • Substitute the hazard: Use safer methods, equipment, or materials.
    • Implement technical solutions: Isolate the hazard using physical barriers, fences, guards, ventilation, insulation, time, or space controls.
    • Control procedures: Define clear work processes, improve training, and implement standard operating procedures.
    • Use appropriate personal protective equipment (least effective): Ensure that PPE is in good condition and provides adequate protection for individuals.
