Emergency Management

Landsvirkjun’s Emergency Management Team (EMT) oversees the company’s response to emergencies. Its top priority is to prevent injuries to people, damage to infrastructure and the environment, and disruptions to electricity production.

Roles and Responsibilities

EMT 's role is:

  • Emergency planning and management, which includes management of response plans, drills, training, reviews, and coordination of emergency procedures.
  • Operational response during emergencies, supporting and coordinating actions together with on-site managers, control centre and other response paries.

The CEO is responsible for the EMT and appoints its members. The Executive Vice President of Hydropower chairs the EMT and is responsible for its operations on behalf of the CEO.

Power System Emergency Management Forum

The Power System Emergency Management Forum is a collaborative network of power production companies, transmission and distribution operators, large energy consumers, and public authorities in Iceland. It focuses on threats that may impact electricity generation, transmission, distribution, and the operation of large consumers.

The forum serves as a supporting organization in Power System emergency situations, supporting the individual EMT´s operations in each organization to retain control over their response efforts. Landsnet serves as the lead entity for the National Power System Emergency Management Forum.

Role of the National Power System Emergency Cooperation

  • Enhance cooperation among members in the event of a crisis, ensuring national interests by improving the safety and operability of electricity production, transmission, distribution, and large-scale energy consumers.

  • Strengthen ties with Iceland’s Civil Protection Coordination Center and other relevant parties in crisis prevention and response planning.

  • Facilitate effective communication and coordination of emergency telecommunications during crises.

  • Standardize terminology, response procedures, and regulatory frameworks, ensuring clear roles and responsibilities for all response parties in emergency situations.
