Enercon to supply wind turbines
The National Power Company of Iceland (Landsvirkjun) has reached an agreement with German wind-turbine manufacturer Enercon for the purchase, installation and operation of 28 wind turbines to be installed at the Búrfellslundur wind farm near Mount Vaðalda. The first 14 wind turbines will be built in early 2026 and brought online later in the year. The wind farm is expected to be fully completed and operational by the end of 2027.
Landsvirkjun put out a call for tender for the wind turbines in January, subject to licensing and planning issues. The tender documentation was analysed and all work on the tender process and negotiations was carried out by consultants from Landsvirkjun, the Danish law firm Kromann Reumert and the international engineering firm Afry. All necessary permits had been secured by October. There were three bidders. Enercon GmbH had the most economically advantageous bid at €140 million, i.e. just over ISK 20 billion.
The manufacturer of the wind turbines, Enercon, has experience in building and operating wind turbines in Iceland, having manufactured the wind turbines that Landsvirkjun has been operating experimentally on the Hafið lava plain since 2013 and the wind turbines in Þykkvabær.
