Climate Leader for the Third Year

For the third year, Landsvirkjun has been listed on the Financial Times' Europe’s Climate Leaders, a list of European companies that have achieved considerable reductions in their core emissions intensity from 2017 to 2022. Landsvirkjun, Iceland's national power company, was the first company in the country to win a seat on the list, a significant milestone that recognises 500 companies as Europe's Climate Leaders.

Landsvirkjun achieved an 8.7% reduction in emissions intensity from 2017 to 2022. Only one other Icelandic company is on FT’s list this year: Arion Bank, which holds a place for the second consecutive year. We want to congratulate the bank on this recognition.

The methodology of the FT’s survey covers Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions intensity. In addition, it covers emissions relative to revenue, absolute emissions reductions, and the company's rating from CDP, the international environmental performance monitor. Landsvirkjun’s CDP rating is A, and the Company is recognised as a leader in environmental issues.

Furthermore, companies that harm the environment considerably through their operations are not eligible on the FT’s list, even though they qualify in the criteria of emissions reductions.

Emissions Among the Lowest

Landsvirkjun’s emissions intensity in 2023 was 3.3 gCO2-eq/kWh, which is one of the lowest emissions known in the power industry, even when compared to other renewable energy generation, where the worldwide emission threshold for green energy generation is 100 gCO2-eq/kWh.

Being included on FT’s prestigious list of Europe’s Climate Leaders is a testament to Landsvirkjun’s commitment to dealing with climate issues and its success.
